The Chauvet cave establishes a tangible link between our ancestors and our contemporary cultural identity. Our goal was not to tell the story of the cave but to illustrate the role and place of artists in Paleolithic societies.
We bring visitors a sense of proximity to the people behind the first masterpiece in our history through virtual reality.
“Chauvet VR: the dawn of art” is a virtual reality experience, including both an immersive film and a virtual tour of the cave.
This project takes visitors on a poetic adventure in the footsteps of our ancestors and to the encounter with the first masterpiece of mankind: the monumental frescoes that have adorned the walls of the Chauvet cave for over 36,000 years.
Chauvet VR is offered to the public by the Syndicat Public pour la Gestion de la Grotte Chauvet, in coproduction with Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma – Le Lab, with the support of Google Arts & Culture, the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Département de l’Ardèche and the Ministère de la Culture et de la communication.
Novelab has been in charge of the modeling of the cave and of the 3D assets. The cave was mapped photogrammetrically by Google and a 3D model was created from the mapping. Our studio retextured the model and completed the missing parts and integrated it into the VR driver.
